What you should know before you apply to join Canine Friends?

Application process

  • When your application has been processed one of our liaison officers will contact
    you and arrange a time to meet you and your dog.

  • If your dog is suitable, and your assessment goes well, you will be assigned a
    location to visit.

  • You will be asked to pay a one off fee for your badge and scarf as well as an
    annual subscription fee which covers your insurance while visiting, a quarterly
    newsletter and the use of our membership management platform.

  • Your liaison officer will then accompany you on initial visits and introduce you to
    key staff and show you the ropes.

  • You will be asked to commit to a schedule of visits convenient to you and the
    place you are visiting.

  • You will be asked to agree to the objectives, code of ethics and ground rules of
    Canine Friends Pet Therapy inc.:

Code of ethics

Members agree to:

  • respect each individual visited and treat everyone with courtesy, care and consideration.

  • respect the rights, privacy and dignity of people visited.

  • accept personal responsibility for meeting and agreed schedule of visits.

  • treat any information gained during visits as confidential.

  • operate as volunteers seeking no financial reward for their work.

Ground rules

Members agree to:​

  • visit only assigned rest homes, hospitals and hospices.

  • maintain a positive relationship with the occupational therapist or other key contact at places they visit.

  • keep to an agreed schedule of visits.

  • advise your contact if a scheduled visit cannot be made.

  • wear Canine Friends identity.scarves for dogs and badges for owners on visits.

  • take only Canine Friends approved dogs on visits.

  • have only Canine Friends approved people accompany them on visits and take only one dog per handler.

  • maintain a high standard of personal presentation and keep dogs clean and groomed.
