Willow is a retired racing greyhound. He now spends his days sleeping, walking or running around the farm and generally taking it easy. Willow is a Canine Friends Pet Therapy dog, visiting a rest home and hospital ward in Oamaru. He is the first dog to do this here. Since starting his visits just over a year ago he has made many friends and continues to make many more. Sadly, not all are still with us. The joy and warmth with which he is greeted is wonderful to see. The residents are proud of him and delight in hearing about his latest adventures or activities. His visits also stimulate lots of conversation, excitement and reminiscing about past pets. He can get someone to come out of their room when they are feeling sad and brings those who are feeling down a little happiness. He likes to show off his tricks. The effect of Willow’s visits on one gentleman was so great that when he moved to a hospital ward, we continued to visit him there so he would not miss out. Through a recent illness Willow was a source of comfort and peace.

Willow also works with young people as a library reading dog. He does hog the comfy cushions and likes to rest his head on little laps. He lies quietly listening as various stories are read to him. Feedback from schools and parents lets us know that he is making a real difference to their reading, confidence and participation at school. The children are proud to have him as their special friend and look forward to choosing books they think Willow will enjoy.
Willow features in his very own blog giving information about training, behaviour and what's happening in his world.
He is also called upon to do guest appearances at dinners, church groups and informative talks with me as part of my vet behaviour business. He is a good dog to teach safety and sensible behaviour around dogs to children.
Willow is not only a great ambassador for polite and friendly dogs in the community but also provides a positive public image for greyhounds.
He is a joy to have in the family and it is a great to share him with so many people who also gain so much from knowing him. Thanks,
Catherine Rivron
